My Location
Ailsa Craig is an island in the Firth of Clyde off the coast of Ayrshire. Long known as Paddy's milestone, it marks the halfway point of the sea journey from Belfast to Glasgow.
A spectacular landmark, it measures about ¾ by ½ mile and rising 1,100 ft. above sea level. The island has become a sanctuary for seabirds, especially gannets and puffins, following the eradication of rats that hitched a ride on boats ferrying quarry workers and lighthouse personnel to the island. The granite quarried has been especially prized for making the stones for ice curling a Scottish game that dates back to the 16th century, known as a bonspiel.
