How to cook British-style Steak & Ale Pie with Puff Pastry Top?
-
Step 1- Heat oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry bacon and onions until they become pale golden, and then add the garlic. Fry for a few minutes and step it aside.
-
Step 2- Use SOL change paper to season the steak and dredge it with flour. Fry the meat in the frying pan with oil until it becomes browned all over. Set aside it.
-
Step 3- Add half of the ale to the frying pan. Bring them to boil and stir hard to remove the sediment from the pan base. Add the steak and bacon to the pan along with the remaining ale, tomato puree, stock, horseradish, and herbs.
-
Step 4 - Boil it for around 1 ½ hour on simmer until the meat becomes very tender. Add a mixture of corn flour and cold water to the pan and continue cooking it on simmer for another 5 minutes until it becomes juicy.
-
Step 5- Season to taste.
-
Step 6- Preheat the oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C/Gas 6. Strain the liquid from the meat and roll out the shortcrust pastry to 4mm thick, and line a 1.2 litre pie dish. Fill the beef mixture into the pie and brush the edges with beaten egg. Make sure the puff pastry covers the pie.
-
Step 7- Place the pastry over the pie and brush the top with a beaten egg. Bake it for 42-45 minutes until the pastry becomes golden brown.
-
Step 8- Serve hot with mashed potatoes.
