History of Lifton Ambrosia Creamery

History of Lifton Ambrosia Creamery

The history of Ambrosia Devon Custard goes back to several decades in 1917, when Albert Morris founded this creamery in Lifton. Ambrosia translates to the meaning 'food from the gods’. He began this creamery to create infant food, for which he bought milk from the local farms. Most farms in this area bred the Red Ruby breed of cows. The company slowly expanded its products, and today, along with a string of other food products, they also sell the Ambrosia Devon Custard.

The company first made and sold their Devon Custard on the report canning lines in Lifton. Later in the 1970s, they improved their technology and bettered their Devon custard and soon took over the market as a leading producer of ready-to-eat custard.

People love Ambrosia’s custard so much because they use local milk from the Devon farms. In fact, their advertising slogan is ‘Devon Knows How They Make it So Creamy’.

Ingredients of Ambrosia Devon Custard

Ingredients of Ambrosia Devon Custard

Ambrosia uses natural ingredients to prepare their custard. They do not add any preservatives to it. Some ingredients are as follows:

Full Cream Milk

They use rich milk from their local farms. Full cream milk contains the natural fat content present in milk. It brings a rich and creamy texture to the custard. Full cream milk is known for its fuller flavour and higher fat content compared to other types of milk.

Skimmed Milk

This is the milk from which most or all of the fat has been removed. It is a lower-fat alternative to full-cream milk. Skimmed milk retains the essential nutrients found in milk but has a lower calorie and fat content.

Sugar

Sugar is a sweetening agent that enhances the overall taste of the custard. It adds sweetness and can balance the flavours of other ingredients. Sugar is an important ingredient in the Ambrosia Devon Custard, as this is what gives it the sweetness.

Modified Starch

Modified starch is a plant-based additive that is used as a thickening agent. It helps give the custard a desirable consistency and ensures a smooth texture.

Natural Flavouring

Natural flavouring refers to extracts or essences derived from natural sources – in Devon custard, it is vanilla. It boost up the overall taste and aroma of the product, providing a natural and pleasing flavour.

Colour Annatto

Annatto is a natural food colouring made from the seeds of the achiote tree. It is used to impart a yellow or orange colour to the product. In Devon custard, it contributes to the visual appeal of the final product and gives it a beautiful natural hue.
