For over two centuries,  Pears has been a part of our daily lives in the form of soap and liquid soap or bodywash. It is known to be very gentle on our skin as it is mainly glycerine mixed with a few other natural products that aid in keeping the skin soft. People still love the soap because of its purity and gentleness.

Back in Britain, participating in Great Exhibition was considered one of the most prestigious acts as it was here that achievements in fields of technology, arts, and industry were rewarded. It was an important cultural event and is considered an important part of the Victorian Era. In 1851, Pears too participated in this exhibition and was given a prize. This helped the company to fortify its reputation in the market further. It was given a special status in the English market and was a symbol of quality.

Although the company has changed its ownership, the brand continues to make reliable soap and liquid soap.

History of Pears Bodywash

History of Pears Bodywash

Pears Bodywash, as we know, is a part of the Pears company. It was founded by Andrew Pears, who has a barber's shop on Gerrad Street, Soho. He served some wealthy socialites during his time who were very conscious about their appearance. Back then, soaps were harsh and tended to damage the skin. Since these people valued the way their faces looked, they used creams and powders from Andrew Pears to hide their flaws. They were caused by damage from soap and other cosmetics in general. This is what inspired Andrew to come up with the idea of making a soap that was gentle on the face. He experimented with soap purification and made a glycerine-based soap with very mild natural products. Thus, the first transparent soap in the world was made. Pears soap was first sold in London in 1807. It had an aroma of English Garden.

Soon, the company became known for its soap. It also captured a large market for soap in the US. With years, the company changed hands and today, it is a part of Hindustan Unilever, and Pears soap is manufactured in India.

Original Ingredients

Original Ingredients

Traditionally, Andrew Pears made the soap using just eight ingredients – glycerine, water, rosemary extract, thyme extract, Pears fragrance essence, natural rosin, sodium tallowate, and sodium cocoate. Tallowate is basically tallow obtained from suet of beef or mutton, and chocolate is a mixture of certain fatty acid salts of coconut oil. In modern days, many more ingredients are added to soap and body wash, yet Pears soap and bodywash are some of the gentlest soaps to use.
